Horizon Student Only 4th Grader in Indiana to Qualify for “GeoBee”

Addison Singleton learned the exciting news this week that she was the only fourth grader in the state to qualify as a semifinalist for the upcoming National Geographic GeoBee! This is exciting news not just for Addison, but also for her teacher Mrs. Ann Lira.

Addison will compete against other Indiana students at the state competition to be held Friday, March 29 at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Students, in grades fourth through eighth, competed in School GeoBees across the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took an online qualifying test, which was then submitted to the National Geographic Society. Addison, Horizon’s school champion, was among Indiana’s top 100 scoring students and now is the only fourth grader in the state who has a chance to be a State Champion!

Below is a list of sample questions that Addison and other students had to answer as GeoBee contestants:

• QUESTION: At more than 100 miles in length, Long Island is the longest barrier island in which state—Kentucky or New York?

  • ANSWER: New York

• ​QUESTION: The Alboran Sea and the Ionian Sea are both part of which larger sea?

  • ANSWER: Mediterranean Sea

• ​QUESTION: It takes about 90 days for a drop of water to travel the length of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River starts in Minnesota and flows 2,340 miles south to its outlet in which state—Louisiana or South Carolina?

  • ANSWER: Louisiana

The National Geographic Society awards a medal, $1,000 in cash, and other prizes to each State Champion. The state winners well then go on to compete in the National Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, Washington, D.C., May 19-22. Students that come in second and third place in their state competitions will receive cash awards of $300 and $100, respectively. 

Prizes for the National Championship include cash prizes and college scholarships:

• 1st Prize: $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll, and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society
• 2nd Prize: $10,000 college scholarship and $1,000 in cash
• 3rd Prize: $5,000 college scholarship and $1,000 in cash
